"Red Cliff II" Movie Review
Director: John Woo
Cast: Tony Leung Chiu-Wai, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Zhang Fengyi, Chang Chen, Zhao Wei, Lin Chi-Ling
The story is based on the Battle of Red Cliff, a decisive battle at the end of the Han Dynasty in early third century China. It was fought between the allied forces of the southern warlords Liu Bei (You Yong) and Sun Quan (Chang Chen) and the numerically superior forces of the Prime Minister Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi) representing the Emperor from the north. Although they are outnumbered, the allied forces managed to defeat Cao Cao's army paving the way for the Three Kingdoms period.
"Red Cliff II" begins with Cao Cao's forces preparing to attack the allied forces camped out at the port of Red Cliff. Disguised as a soldier, Sun Shangxiang (Zhao Wei) infiltrates Cao Cao's camp to act as a spy and secretly sends reports to Zhuge Liang (Takeshi Kaneshiro) via a pigeon. At the same time, a typhoid epidemic spreads through Cao Cao's army causing some deaths. Cao Cao sends the corpses on rafts towards the allied camp with the intention to pass the plague to them as well. The plan works and Liu Bei decides to pull his troops out and head for home after many of them are infected. With the alliance broken, only Sun Quan's army is left to defend Red Cliff.
Zhou Yu (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai) and Zhuge Liang challenge each other to eliminate Cao Cao's naval commanders, and produce 100,000 arrows in 3 days. Having completed their respective missions using simple yet effective tactics, Zhou Yu and Zhuge Liang discuss their next move, which is to attack the enemy with fire. Meanwhile, Liu Bei changes his mind and his army turn back towards Red Cliff to join Sun Quan in the final battle against Cao Cao's forces.
Compared to the previous film, "Red Cliff II" only has a single battle scene but what a scene it is to behold. The first half of the film builds tension and only shows both sides engaged in a tactical battle of wits. This may be boring to some action junkie but once the battle begins in the second half of the film, the audience is treated with a long and fiery battle sequence. Credit is to be given to director John Woo as the final battle between the alliance and Cao Cao's forces is truly spectacular and epic.
Fans of the director will get to see his usual signatures that are present in most of his previous films - themes of brotherhood and loyalty among men, a white pigeon and a climatic standoff between the main characters. Another message the film tries to convey to the audience is to make tea, not war.
"Red Cliff II" is the best movie Woo has made since he left for Hollywood over a decade ago. As someone once suggested before, we should confiscate his passport and not allow him to leave Hong Kong again so he can continue to make quality movies. I strongly agree to this.
Score: 8/10

"Goemon" Full Trailer
The film is directed by Kazuaki Kiriya and stars Yosuke Eguchi as the title character. Based on the trailer, the film looks promising and I hope it will be much better than the director's previous effort, "Casshern" (2004).

New "Banlieue 13 Ultimatum" Poster and Trailer
Cyril Raffaelli and David Belle are back in action in this sequel to 2004's "Banlieue 13" aka "District B13". Just who exactly are these two guys, you ask? Well, Raffaelli is a French martial artist and stuntman who is skilled in karate and wushu. He is a regular in Luc Besson's films and I best remember him as one of the twins who fight with Jet Li at the end of "Kiss of the Dragon" (2001). Belle on the other hand comes from a family of firefighters and excels in climbing, gymnastics and martial arts. He is widely credited as the founder of parkour (the art of movement). A notable potrayal of parkour can be seen in the beginning of "Casino Royale" (2006), when James Bond chases a bomb-maker through a construction site.

The film is directed by Scott Sanders and is set in the 1970s. Michael Jai White portrays Black Dynamite, a kung fu fighting bad-ass who is modeled after Blaxploitation icons. He goes on a warpath against “The Man” when his brother is murdered and heroin is pumped into local orphanages.
New Trailer For "Shinjuku Incident"
The trailer for Jackie Chan’s latest film, "Shinjuku Incident" is now available online. The film will make its world premiere by opening the 33rd Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) which will run from March 22 through April 13, 2009.
Directed by Derek Yee (One Night In Mongkok), "Shinjuku Incident" marks a new turn in Chan’s career as he moves away from the action/comedy films that he is well known for. The film will feature very little of Chan’s trademark screen action but instead focuses mostly on the dramatic story.
In the upcoming crime drama, Chan plays an illegal Chinese immigrant in Japan. He gets involved with the local yakuza crime lords and is forced to commit crimes against his conscience in order to survive. The film will co-star Naoto Takenaka, Daniel Wu, Xu Jinglei, and Fan Bingbing with appearances by Asian film veterans Chin Kar-lok, Ken Watanabe, Yasuaki Kurata, and Lam Suet.
"Shinjuku Incident" opens in Hong Kong and Malaysia on April 2, 2009.

Hugh Jackman Updates Fans On "Wolverine"
Hey everyone -
It's Hugh Jackman, sending this note from freezing Vancouver. I have read a lot of your online comments regarding the footage that we are currently shooting and I share your passion for the Wolverine character and the movie - I owe it all to you guys!
I wanted to reach out and let you know that due to scheduling conflicts with certain cast members and location/weather considerations, we had to wait until now to shoot a couple of scenes. Please rest assured that WOLVERINE will be badass and hopefully meet all of your expectations. I am stoked by the positive response to the teaser, which clearly reflects the tone and scope of the film. If you like that, we've got much more in store!
In the meantime, here's an exclusive shot of some characters you may recognize...
Cheers,
Hugh

"Ip Man" Movie Review
Director: Wilson Yip
Cast: Donnie Yen, Simon Yam, Lam Ka Tung, Fan Siu-Wong, Hiroyuki Ikuechi
I finally got the opportunity to watch the much anticipated "Ip Man" last Friday and am happy to report that I absolutely enjoyed it. It is one of the best martial arts movies I've watched since Jet Li's "Fearless" two years ago.
The film is marketed as an adaptation of the life story of Yip Man, the grandmaster of Wing Chun style kung fu, who also happens to be Bruce Lee's martial arts master. However, just like the biopic of Huo Yuan Jia in "Fearless", I can't help but notice that half of the film is historically inaccurate.
In "Ip Man", we get to see another side of Yen. As we all know, he is known more for his ass-kicking skills than his acting abilities. In most of his films, Yen plays flamboyant characters and usually overacts. Here, his performance is quite subdued as he embodies the character of the great Wing Chun master.
The film portrays Yip Man as a wealthy martial artist who is contented with his life and is not interested in setting up a martial arts school. It is during the Japanese occupation of China that he realises the need to spread his knowledge of Wing Chun to help his people defend themselves against oppressions.
- Although he is from a wealthy family, Yip Man worked as a police officer while in Foshan, whereas in the film, he doesn't work at all.
- During the Japanese occupation of Foshan, Yip Man was indeed offered the job to teach martial arts to the Japanese troops. He refused out of principle but unlike in the film, he never challenged a Japanese general to a duel.
- Yip Man only fled to Hong Kong after Wold War II when the Communists took over mainland China. In the film, he is shown fleeing Foshan to escape the Japanese army. I believe this change is made to please the Chinese film censors.
Score: 8/10
