Four More Production Blogs For "Merantau"

Here are four more production blogs for “Merantau", an upcoming Indonesian martial arts film. Written and directed by British filmmaker Gareth Evans, the film showcases Silat Harimau, a branch of the martial arts form of Pencak Silat. It is claimed that the film will introduce to the world Indonesia’s rising action star, Iko Uwais and the martial arts form of Pencak Silat just like what "Ong Bak" did to Tony Jaa and Muay Thai.

Official synopsis of the film:
In Minangkabau, West Sumatera, Yuda a skilled practitioner of Silat Harimau is in the final preparations to begin his "Merantau" a century's old rites-of-passage to be carried out by the community's young men that will see him leave the comforts of his idyllic farming village and make a name for himself in the bustling city of Jakarta. After a series of setbacks leave Yuda homeless and uncertain about his new future, a chance encounter results in him defending the orphaned Astri from becoming the latest victim of a European human trafficking ring led by the wildly psychotic, Ratger and his right-hand man Lars. With Ratger injured in the mêlée and seeking both his "merchandise" and bloody retribution, Yuda's introduction to this bustling city is a baptism of fire as he is forced to go on the run with Astri and her younger brother Adit as all the pimps and gangsters that inhabit the night hound the streets chasing their every step. With escape seemingly beyond their grasp, Yuda has no choice but to face his attackers in an adrenaline charged, jaw-dropping finale. Check out the production blogs below:-

"Merantau" is expected to be released in Indonesia on April 30, 2009.

"Dragonball Evolution" Movie Review

Director: James Wong
Cast: Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-Fat, Emmy Rossum, James Marsters, Joon Park, Eriko Tamura, Randall Duk Kim, Jamie Chung

"Dragonball Evolution" is based on the popular Japanese manga created by Akira Toriyama and centres on Goku who goes on a journey to find Master Roshi after his grandfather's death. He has to gather seven mystical Dragon Balls before the evil Lord Piccolo does and along the way meets Bulma and Yamcha who both aids him on his quest.

After seeing the film's trailer months ago, I was expecting the movie to suck big time. Everything in the trailer seems wrong. But now that I have finally watched the film, I have to admit that I was partially mistaken. The movie does not suck as much as I thought it would, but it is not all that great either.
The plot feels rushed as everything in the film happens really fast. I guess that's to be expected when you condense 16 volumes of the manga into a 84 minutes movie. I am not too happy with the changes made to this adaptation. Goku is a Caucasian and goes to a high school? Another thing I would like to point out is that the CG Oozaru that appears near the end of the film looks really fake and silly.

I am not really sure who the film's actual target audience is as I feel that the film will appeal to neither the fans nor those who are unfamiliar with the source material. IMHO "Dragonball Evolution" is best suited for kids and curious fans. No sequel, please.

"Watchmen" Movie Review

Director: Zack Snyder
Cast: Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino

"Watchmen" is based on the 1986-1987 comic book series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons and is set in an alternate 1985 America where the existence of superheroes has dramatically changed the course of history such as the outcome of Vietnam War and the presidency of Richard Nixon. The country is edging closer to a nuclear war with the Soviet Union as the masked vigilante Rorschach investigates the murder of a government sponsored superhero.

The original comic book series was an instant classic and till today, it is highly regarded as one of the all-time greatest graphic novel. So, a film adaptation is highly anticipated by fans everywhere even though at the same time, many considered the graphic novel 'unfilmable'. To adapt "Watchmen" into a film poses the challenge of compressing the 12 issues graphic novel into a single movie.

Director Zack Snyder managed to pull it off and creates a very faithful adaptation of the graphic novel and this film is as close as you can get to seeing the original source material come to life. The film also managed to capture the essence of the graphic novel in deconstructing and challenging the conventional concept of superheroes.

Overall, I think "Watchmen" is brilliant and will especially appeal to fans of the graphic novel. For those who haven't read the source material, the film will definitely encourage them to go pick it up.

OMG! Here Comes The Japanese Spider-Man

Way back in 1978, Toei Company Ltd obtained license from Marvel to produce a Spider-Man series for Japanese television. Now, this being a Japanese television series, we all should know better than to expect a typical web-slinger. While the Japanese Spider-Man's costume was still based on the original, the storyline had been drastically changed to include giant robots and monsters.

Marvel is currently posting the series on its official website for free viewing, releasing an episode every Thursday, starting March 5, 2009. Check out the trailer above for a sneak peek.

Arnold Talks About His Cameos In "Terminator Salvation" and "The Expendables"

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger made an appearance recently at the 2009 Arnold Classic and TheArnoldFans.com was there to ask him about his cameos in both McG's "Terminator Salvation" and Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables ". Here is what he has to say:

"I have seen the movie, but I have not seen it as a finished product yet. I have not seen it yet with the Terminator special effects and some of the sound and the music is not in there yet and so on. So I really cannot comment on it, what the movie will be like as a finished product. There's a rule that you never talk about a movie unless you have seen the finished product. But you know as I said to the director when they began that I wish them the best of luck, that I'm happy that they move forward with the franchise, I am very happy with where I am with my profession as the governor and they should try to find a way of doing a story that does not include me at all, not even one single shot in it. I don't believe in that. To kind of have them go out and promote the movie and say you know Arnold is in the movie and everyone thinks that I'm the Terminator and in fact you only see one second of me in there and so I don't think thats the right thing to do. And you know that's the danger of that, and that's why I feel reluctant to be part of the movie in the first place. So it doesn't get promoted that way.

But to talk about Sly's movie you know Sly and I we became very good friends over the last 10, 15 years, especially since the Planet Hollywood days. And we've traveled all around the world. and we've had a terrific time and so he was very helpful to me when I ran for governor. Or with any of the initiatives that were on ballot, he came to fundraising in different places and he was always there to pump up the people and all that. So I... naturally when he asked me if I would do a cameo, which will just be something quick, like I walk out of a hotel or out of a office building and he will walk up and we will bump into each other and there will be some mumbling and then we will walk off (crowd laughs). So it will be something very simple, that will be again, just a cameo, so that's what we're going to do. I promised him I'd do that and I'm looking forward to that
."

Seems like 'the Governator' is hinting that he might show up in "Terminator Salvation", but he doesn't want McG to sell the movie based entirely on his appearance. I believe that's why we don't get to see him in the trailers. Anyway, what is confirmed as of now is that he will definately make an appearance in Stallone's "The Expendables".

"Green Lantern" Producer Talks

Producer Donald De Line was recently promoting the comedy "I Love You, Man" when he spoke to Collider and gave fans an idea of what to expect in the upcoming live-action adaptation of "Green Lantern".

De Line said that the film will be an action/adventure piece and there will be a good deal of character based humour, so the tone will probably be more similar to Marvel's "Iron Man" instead of "The Dark Knight". He also said that the film will feature the Hal Jordan version of Green Lantern.

De Line has also confirmed that Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) would direct the film, and he said that a production designer and a costume designer have been hired and they will be going to Australia next week to scout for locations.

"Green Lantern" is scheduled for release on December 17, 2010

Japanese Trailer For "Shinjuku Incident"

As some of you may have heard, Jackie Chan’s latest film, "Shinjuku Incident" will not be released in China as the censorship board has problems with the amount of violence in the film and also the portrayal of Chinese involved with organised crime while living abroad. The irony here is that the film will be shown in Japan despite the overwhelmingly negative portrayal of the Japanese in the film. Check out the Japanese trailer above.

Directed by Derek Yee (One Night In Mongkok), "Shinjuku Incident" marks a new turn in Chan’s career as he moves away from the action/comedy films that he is well known for. The film will feature very little of Chan’s trademark screen action but instead focuses mostly on the dramatic story.

In the upcoming crime drama, Chan plays an illegal Chinese immigrant in Japan. He gets involved with the local yakuza crime lords and is forced to commit crimes against his conscience in order to survive. The film will co-star Naoto Takenaka, Daniel Wu, Xu Jinglei, and Fan Bingbing with appearances by Asian film veterans Chin Kar-lok, Ken Watanabe, Yasuaki Kurata, and Lam Suet.

"Shinjuku Incident" opens in Hong Kong and Malaysia on April 2, 2009 and in Japan on May 1, 2009.
