New Trailer For '77

It turns out that besides "Fanboys", there is another "Star Wars" themed project in the works, an indie semi-autobiographical film from Patrick Read Johnson simply titled '77. To all you non-geeks out there, 1977 is the year George Lucas' "Star Wars" is released in theatres. '77 went into production in 2004 and was initially supposed to come out around the same time that "Star Wars: Episode III" hit theatres. But instead, the movie has sat in post production for nearly five years and now it seems that the filmmakers have finally secured enough funding to complete the project. The film premiered at the Hamptons International Film Festival in October of last year and now a new trailer has just been released.

Official Synopsis:
Pat Johnson is the only Sci-Fi movie obsessed teen filmmaker in his rural home town of Wadsworth, Illinois (population 750). Pat's desire is to escape "fly-over country" for Hollywood. He must first overcome his fear of leaving everything he knows and loves behind to chase this unlikely dream. The pending release of a new movie called "Star Wars" on 5-25-77 is instrumental in shaping Pat's destiny.

"X-Men Origins: Wolverine" Movie Review

Director: Gavin Hood
Cast: Hugh Jackman, Liev Schreiber, Danny Huston, Lynn Collins, Taylor Kitsch, will.i.am, Kevin Durand, Daniel Henney, Dominic Monaghan, Ryan Reynolds

As we all know, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" deals with the origins of Wolverine, the most popular character of the X-Men movie franchise. As much as I enjoyed the movie, I feel that it is not as good as the previous "X-Men" installments.

In the previous X-Men movies, Wolverine had brief flasbacks of his involvement in the Weapon X program. In this film however, the scene where adamantium is bonded to Wolverine's skeleton is inconsistent with those in the flashbacks. Where are the scientists with face masks? Why is the tank lit with blue light instead of green? When escaping the facility, why is Wolverine's hair nicely shaped and dry even though he just emerged from a water tank? These are all basic details and it is beyond me why the filmmakers got them wrong.

Ryan Reynolds is perfect as Wade Wilson/Deadpool although his character only appeared briefly in the film. But near the end of the film, the filmmakers screwed him up bigtime. Boo! Professor X makes a cameo and the same technology in "X-Men: The Last Stand" is used to make him look 20 years younger. However, the CGI was not done well enough and Professor X ended up looking very fake. Yikes.

There are two separate scenes after the end credits depending on which movie print you're watching in theatres. The version I watched shows Wolverine drinking in a bar in Japan. The barmaid asks him if he is drinking to forget and he answers: "No, I'm drinking to remember". It is reported all over the web that the second scene after the credits shows Weapon XI/Deadpool reaching for his severed head.

Don't get me wrong. "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" is a fun movie but it just doesn't live up to the standard set by the first two X-Men installments. Heck, even "X-Men: The Last Stand" is a much better film compared to this.

Score: 5/10

Full Trailer For "Merantau"

The full trailer for the upcoming Indonesian martial arts film, “Merantau" is finally here. Written and directed by British filmmaker Gareth Evans, the film showcases Silat Harimau, a branch of the martial arts form of Pencak Silat. It is claimed that the film will introduce to the world Indonesia’s rising action star, Iko Uwais and the martial arts style of Pencak Silat just like what "Ong Bak" did to Tony Jaa and Muay Thai.

Official synopsis of the film:
In Minangkabau, West Sumatera, Yuda a skilled practitioner of Silat Harimau is in the final preparations to begin his "Merantau" a century's old rites-of-passage to be carried out by the community's young men that will see him leave the comforts of his idyllic farming village and make a name for himself in the bustling city of Jakarta. After a series of setbacks leave Yuda homeless and uncertain about his new future, a chance encounter results in him defending the orphaned Astri from becoming the latest victim of a European human trafficking ring led by the wildly psychotic, Ratger and his right-hand man Lars. With Ratger injured in the mêlée and seeking both his "merchandise" and bloody retribution, Yuda's introduction to this bustling city is a baptism of fire as he is forced to go on the run with Astri and her younger brother Adit as all the pimps and gangsters that inhabit the night hound the streets chasing their every step. With escape seemingly beyond their grasp, Yuda has no choice but to face his attackers in an adrenaline charged, jaw-dropping finale.

Due to the extension of the production, the release date for "Merantau" in Indonesia has been pushed back from April 30, 2009 to August 6, 2009.
