"Real Steel" Trailer

The first trailer for the upcoming action film "Real Steel" has been released. The film is directed by Shawn Levy and stars Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly and Kevin Durand.

Hugh Jackman plays Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

"Real Steel" is scheduled for release on October 7, 2011.

"Ip Man 2" Movie Review

Director: Wilson Yip Wai-Shun
Cast: Donnie Yen, Sammo Hung, Lynn Hung, Huang Xiaoming, Simon Yam, Kent Cheng, Fan Siu-Wong, Darren Shahlavi

"Ip Man 2" picks up after the events of the first film with Ip Man (Donnie Yen) leaving Foshan and relocating to Hong Kong in 1949. While the previous installment is a sensationalized semi-biography of the martial arts master, the sequel is far more historically inaccurate. I estimated almost 70% of the events in this movie are fictional.

The first half of the movie follows Ip Man setting up his own school in Hong Kong to teach Wing Chun and faces rivalry with the local martial arts master (Sammo Hung). Those of you who saw the trailer will know that the highlight of this film is the showdown between Donnie Yen and Sammo Hung. This is the duel everyone is paying to see and as expected, the fight choreography is both intense and fantastic.

The second half of the movie deals with the evil British who looks down upon the Chinese people of Hong Kong. The plot is nothing new and is quite common among Hong Kong-mainland China co-productions nowadays and is meant to appeal to the nationalist pride of the mainland China audience. However, the filmmakers went overboard with their attempt as the British in the film are so obnoxious and racist that it is hilarious. The main offender here is Darren Shahlavi as Twister, the British boxer who spends most of his screen time shouting how much he hates the Chinese. His overacting is so over-the-top that it risks being cartoonish. This is in contrast to Hiroyuki Ikeuchi's portrayal of the honorable General Miura in the first film.

If you overlook the historical inaccuracies and overacting bad guys, "Ip Man 2" is a satisfying martial arts film thanks to Donnie Yen's calm and charismatic performance, and Sammo Hung's excellent fight choreography.

Score: 8/10

Second Trailer for "The Green Hornet"

Here's the brand new, second theatrical trailer for "The Green Hornet", directed by Michel Gondry and starring Seth Rogen, Jay Chou, Cameron Diaz, Christoph Waltz, Edward James Olmos and Tom Wilkinson. You can check out the trailer above, courtesy of Yahoo! Movies.

Although this new trailer gave me a much better impression of the film, I still think that the choice of casting Seth Rogen as the Green Hornet is highly questionable. On top of that, the slow-mo fight scenes look really fake to me and is in great contrast to Bruce Lee's 'real kung-fu'.

IMHO, the short film directed by Aurélien Poitrimoult is way more faithful to the source material and I wish Columbia Pictures hired him instead. You can check out the awesome short film below:

"The Green Hornet" first originated as a radio series on WXYZ (a local Detroit station) from 1936 to 1952. ABC then adapted "The Green Hornet" to television on 1966. The television series starred Van Williams as The Green Hornet and introduced martial arts master Bruce Lee to American audiences as Kato.

"The Green Hornet" is set for release in Malaysia on January 27, 2011.

Official synopsis:
1873. Arizona Territory. A stranger with no memory of his past stumbles into the hard desert town of Absolution. The only hint to his history is a mysterious shackle that encircles one wrist. What he discovers is that the people of Absolution don’t welcome strangers, and nobody makes a move on its streets unless ordered to do so by the iron-fisted Colonel Dolarhyde. It’s a town that lives in fear. But Absolution is about to experience fear it can scarcely comprehend as the desolate city is attacked by marauders from the sky. Screaming down with breathtaking velocity and blinding lights to abduct the helpless one by one, these monsters challenge everything the residents have ever known.

Now, the stranger they rejected is their only hope for salvation. As this gunslinger slowly starts to remember who he is and where he's been, he realizes he holds a secret that could give the town a fighting chance against the alien force. With the help of the elusive traveler Ella, he pulls together a posse comprised of former opponents – townsfolk, Dolarhyde and his boys, outlaws and Apache warriors – all in danger of annihilation. United against a common enemy, they will prepare for an epic showdown for survival.

"Bodyguards and Assassins" Movie Review

Director: Teddy Chan Tak-Sum
Cast: Wang Xueqi, Tony Leung Ka-Fai, Hu Jun, Nicholas Tse, Wang Bo-Chieh, Donnie Yen, Leon Lai, Li Yuchun, Mengke Bateer, Fan Bing-Bing, Eric Tsang, Simon Yam, Zhou Yun, Cung Le

"Bodyguards and Assassins" tells a fictional account of an assassination attempt on Chinese revolutionary Dr. Sun Yat-sen when he visited Hong Kong on October 1905 and the efforts of a group of "bodyguards" to protect him.

In order to enjoy this film, you'll need to set yourself the proper expectation first. The film was marketed as a martial arts/action movie with Donnie Yen as the lead actor, which is a little misleading. Actually, very little action happens in the first hour and all the fight scenes/action sequences seen in the trailer only occurs in the second half of the film. In addition, Donnie Yen is not the main actor in this film but instead, part of an ensemble cast.

The first half of the film focuses on introducing the main characters and their motivations for protecting Dr. Sun Yat-sen during his visit to Hong Kong. Each cast members delivers solid performance, especially Hu Jun who plays the Xiao-Guo, the head assassin and Nicholas Tse who plays Ah-Si, the rickshaw puller. The film does take its time to set up the stage for the big finale in the second hour when all hell breaks loose.

Overall, "Bodyguards and Assassins" is more of an political drama than an action film and may disappoint those who are expecting Donnie Yen to single-handedly wipe out the bad guys. With the proper expectations, this film is quite enjoyable thanks to its solid direction and ensemble cast.

"The Storm Warriors" Movie Review

Director: Danny Pang and Oxide Pang
Cast: Aaron Kwok, Ekin Cheng, Kenny Ho, Nicholas Tse, Charlene Choi, Simon Yam, Lam Suet, Tang Yan, Patrick Tam

Firstly, I have to apologise as it has been quite a while since I last wrote a movie review. You see, I have this condition called "laziness" and the doctors told me that there is no cure for it. Yes, it's that serious. But anyway, let's begin with the movie review, shall we?

"The Storm Warriors" is the highly anticipated sequel to the 1998 Hong Kong film "The Storm Riders". So, is the sequel worth the wait? I don't think so. That's what most of my friends told me but that didn't stop me from watching this movie. Yeah, I'm a big fan of the comic book series but boy, was I really disappointed.

Just like to previous installment, "The Storm Warriors" is adapted from the "Fung Wan" aka Wind & Cloud comic book series created by Ma Wing-Shing and focuses on two of the most popular story arcs - 'Japanese Invasion' and 'Death Battle'.

The main problem here is that the film makers attempt to adapt the two story arcs which spans approximately 45 volumes of comic books and condense them into a single movie. As a result of this, the characters are under-developed and some of the plots are left unexplained.

Being made 11 years after "The Storm Riders", the visual effects of the sequel is much superior, as expected. But it appears that the film makers have put too much effort into creating the film's stylized look. In every fight sequence, slow motion is employed almost every few seconds as if to tell the audience "See how cool this looks!". How ridiculous.

As a sequel, "The Storm Warriors" arrives too late and delivers too little. Watch this movie only if you're a die-hard fan of the comic books.

Second Trailer For Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood"

The second trailer for Ridley Scott's "Robin Hood" has just been released by Universal Pictures. It features new footage from the film and is far better than the first trailer.

Russell Crowe stars as the legendary figure known by generations as Robin Hood, whose exploits have endured in popular mythology and ignited the imagination of those who share his spirit of adventure and righteousness. In 13th century England, Robin and his band of marauders confront corruption in a local village and lead an uprising against the crown that will forever alter the balance of world power. And whether thief or hero, one man from humble beginnings will become an eternal symbol of freedom for his people.

"Robin Hood" chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Cate Blanchett), a woman skeptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Second Red Band Trailer For "Kick-Ass"

The second red band trailer for the upcoming superhero film "Kick-Ass" has been released. It is almost similar to the previous trailer and is filled with a lot or cursing... just the way I like it.

"Kick-Ass" is based on the comic-book of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr. The film tells the story of average teenager Dave Lizewski, who decides to take his obsession with comic-books as inspiration to become a real-life superhero. As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name (Kick-Ass), assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There's only one problem: He has absolutely no superpowers.

His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes (an 11 year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl and her father, Big Daddy) and forges a friendship with another fledgling superhero, Red Mist.

"Kick-Ass" is directed by Matthew Vaughn and stars Nicolas Cage, Lyndsy Fonseca, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Mark Strong, Aaron Johnson and Chloe Moretz. The film is scheduled for release in the US on April 16, 2010.

Trailer For "The Legend Is Born: Ip Man"

I really have no idea they are making a prequel to Wilson Yip's "Ip Man" (2008) until I came across the trailer for "The Legend Is Born: Ip Man" a few days ago. The prequel is directed by Herman Yau and stars To Yu-Hang, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao, Ip Chun and Fan Siu-wong.

"The Legend Is Born: Ip Man" focuses on the early life of Ip Man, before the events depicted in Wilson Yip's "Ip Man". The film centers on his romantic relationships while under the tutelage of 3 Wing Chun masters - Chan Wah-shun, Ng Chung-sok and Leung Bik.

First-time actor To Yu-hang portrays the young Ip Man. He has trained in Wing Chun for 6 years and received help from Donnie Yen on how to approach the character. Likewise, Sammo Hung gave him advice on how to act without over exaggeration by presenting him a copy of Akira Kurosawa’s classic "Sugata Sanshiro".

Sammo Hung will portray Chan Wah-shun, Ip Man’s first Wing Chun master while Yuen Biao will portray Chan Wah-shun's second eldest disciple and also Ip Man's mentor, Ng Chung-sok.

The film also features Ip Man's eldest son in real life, Ip Chun. He will play Leung Bik, his father's third Wing Chun master. Although he will be turning 86 this year, he reportedly has a few action scenes in the film. However, he found it really tedious and vows to never get involved in acting again.

As you can witness from the trailer above, the film’s fight choreography employs a high level of realism. Due to this, injuries on set were common. Yuen Biao, who goes up against Fan Siu-wong and Sammo Hung, suffered a rib injury severe enough he had to take time off from the shoot to recuperate. Fan Siu-wong got slashed on the head by Bernice Liu's katana on the first day she arrived, requiring 3 stitches.

"The Legend Is Born: Ip Man" will be released in Hong Kong sometime this year.

"Tekken" Movie Trailer

The trailer for the upcoming martial arts film "Tekken" is now online. The film is based on the popular video game series of the same name. The trailer doesn't look too bad and the film should be better than "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li" and "DOA: Dead or Alive".

The film is directed by Dwight H. Little and the written by Alan B. McElroy. Cyril Raffaelli is the film's fight choreographer and this is good news for fans of martial arts films. Raffaelli is a French martial artist and stuntman who co-starred and choreographed the fights in the French action flicks "Banlieue 13" and "Banlieue 13 Ultimatum". You may also remember him as one of the twins who fight Jet Li at the end of "Kiss of the Dragon".

"Tekken" stars Jon Foo as Jin Kazama, Cung Le as Marshall Law, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Heihachi Mishima, Kelly Overton as Christie Monteiro, Gary Daniels as Bryan Fury, Luke Goss as Steve Fox, Ian Anthony Dale as Kazuya, Lateef Crowder as Eddy Gordo, Candice Hillebrand as Nina Williams, Darrin Dewitt Henson as Raven and Nathan Jones as Craig Marduk.

Interestingly, three of the film's cast members were in the Thai martial arts film "Tom-Yum-Goong" which stars Tony Jaa. Those who have watched the film will recall the scene in a Buddhist monastery where Tony Jaa fights a Capoeira fighter, a wushu swordsman and a giant wrestler, one after another. Well, the Capoeira fighter, wushu swordsman and giant wrestler were played by Lateef Crowder, Jon Foo and Nathan Jones respectively.

"Tekken" will premiere on Blu-ray and DVD in the UK on April 5, 2010.
