"Dragonball Evolution" Movie Review

Director: James Wong
Cast: Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-Fat, Emmy Rossum, James Marsters, Joon Park, Eriko Tamura, Randall Duk Kim, Jamie Chung

"Dragonball Evolution" is based on the popular Japanese manga created by Akira Toriyama and centres on Goku who goes on a journey to find Master Roshi after his grandfather's death. He has to gather seven mystical Dragon Balls before the evil Lord Piccolo does and along the way meets Bulma and Yamcha who both aids him on his quest.

After seeing the film's trailer months ago, I was expecting the movie to suck big time. Everything in the trailer seems wrong. But now that I have finally watched the film, I have to admit that I was partially mistaken. The movie does not suck as much as I thought it would, but it is not all that great either.
The plot feels rushed as everything in the film happens really fast. I guess that's to be expected when you condense 16 volumes of the manga into a 84 minutes movie. I am not too happy with the changes made to this adaptation. Goku is a Caucasian and goes to a high school? Another thing I would like to point out is that the CG Oozaru that appears near the end of the film looks really fake and silly.

I am not really sure who the film's actual target audience is as I feel that the film will appeal to neither the fans nor those who are unfamiliar with the source material. IMHO "Dragonball Evolution" is best suited for kids and curious fans. No sequel, please.

Score: 4/10

At times like this, you have to ask yourself this important question "Why are you watching movies?". If you were thinking of being entertained, I think the movie did a good job.

Even though it does not stay true to the comic original storyline, i think it was something necessary given the overall cast & target audience.

So if you have a problem with the actors not being asian, and that Asians are not the main target audience, then go make your own movie!
