"Quantum of Solace" Movie Review

Director: Marc Forster
Cast: Daniel Craig, Olga Kurylenko, Mathieu Amalric, Judi Dench, Giancarlo Giannini, Gemma Arterton, Jeffrey Wright

James Bond is back, and this time he's pissed. "Quantum of Solace" continues from where "Casino Royale" left off. After the death of his lover in the previous movie, Bond mixes revenge and duty as he hunts down the shadowy organisation that blackmailed her.

"Quantum of Solace" is the first ever Bond movie where the plot continues directly from the previous installment. This means you will need to watch "Casino Royale" beforehand to fully understand the motivation behind Bond's revenge and also the relationship between Bond and his allies, René Mathis and Felix Leiter.

This movie is not as ground-breaking as "Casino Royale" but it is faster paced with more action and explosions. The movie kicks off with Bond in a car chase as his Aston Martin DB9 is pursued by armed henchmen through the narrow cliff-top lanes of Lake Como, Italy. From then on, we are served with more furious pursuits above rooftops, in speedboats and in planes that will leave you breathless. In the final showdown, Bond sets off a chain of explosions that blows a hydrogen fuel powered eco-hotel to kingdom come.

Starting with "Casino Royale" the filmmakers decides to reboot the Bond franchise by updating it for the new generation. The end result is a more humanised Bond who is more grounded to reality. Daniel Craig's portrayal of the super spy as cold and humourless is a departure from the old-school Bonds. The smart-ass remarks of Connery, Moore and Brosnan are no where to be seen. As with the previous film, the character of Q is not featured and that means no fancy gadgets (except for his cool Sony Ericsson C905). For better or worse, James Bond now feels more like Jason Bourne in a designer suit. Not that I'm complaining because I loved all three of the "Bourne" films.

Fans of old-school Bond may criticise this movie for Bond's lack of humour and fancy gadgets. I'm not big fan of Bond movies, and as a casual moviegoer, I found "Quantum of Solace" quite enjoyable.

Score: 7.5/10

Well, I have watched a few of the previous James Bonds and I have to say that I prefer this one.

The overall storyline is a lot more interesting, and Daniel Craig is really good looking. (A lot less "gay-ish" compared to the last Bond - juz my 2 cents). :)
